10 Fun Plumbing Facts You Probably Didn’t Know!

Plumbing is one of those everyday essentials that keeps your home running smoothly, but how much do you really know about it? At Diamond Plumbing, we love sharing some cool, quirky, and downright fun facts about plumbing that may just surprise you! Whether you're a homeowner, renter, or business owner, these 10 fun plumbing facts will give you something to think about the next time you turn on a faucet or flush the toilet. So, let’s dive in (pun intended)!

1. The Word “Plumbing” Comes From Latin Did you know that the word "plumbing" has its roots in ancient Rome? It comes from the Latin word "plumbum," which means lead. This is because Roman plumbing systems used lead pipes to transport water to public baths and homes. Don't worry, today’s pipes are made from safer materials like copper, PVC, and PEX.

2. The First Flushing Toilet? A Royal Affair! Sir John Harington, godson of Queen Elizabeth I, invented the first flushing toilet in 1596! He even installed one in the Queen’s palace. However, flushing toilets didn’t become widely used until the 19th century. Today, modern toilets use an average of 1.6 gallons per flush, but older models could use up to 7 gallons!

3. The Average Person Spends 3 Years on the Toilet Believe it or not, the average person will spend about three years of their life on the toilet! That’s a lot of time, which makes it all the more important to have a well-functioning bathroom. If you're having plumbing issues, our team at Diamond Plumbing can help ensure your time on the throne is worry-free!

4. Thomas Crapper Did Not Invent the Toilet Though his name is often associated with toilets, Thomas Crapper did not invent the flushing toilet. He was, however, a successful plumber and businessman who popularized the modern toilet with several key improvements. His name lives on thanks to clever marketing.

5. Dripping Faucets Waste More Than You Think A single dripping faucet can waste over 3,000 gallons of water in a year! That's the equivalent of 180 showers! If you notice a drip, don’t ignore it. Give Diamond Plumbing a call, and we’ll fix it in no time, saving you money on your water bill and helping the environment.

6. The Longest Plumbing System Ever? The longest plumbing system in the world is located in Los Angeles, California. The Los Angeles Aqueduct stretches 338 miles, supplying water to the city from the Owens River. Talk about a long commute!

7. Plumbers Were Part of the First Space Missions You wouldn’t expect plumbers to play a role in space exploration, but they did! NASA actually hired plumbers to help design the plumbing systems for the space shuttle. After all, astronauts need a working toilet in zero gravity!

8. The Highest Water Pressure Recorded The highest recorded water pressure from a household faucet is a mind-blowing 500 psi (pounds per square inch), which could blow out most pipes! Normal household water pressure should be between 40-60 psi. If you suspect your home has high water pressure, it’s a good idea to get it checked by the experts at Diamond Plumbing to avoid costly damage.  Water pressure is a huge problem in the Ada area.

9. PVC Pipes Were Invented in 1926 PVC pipes, a staple of modern plumbing, were invented in 1926. They’re durable, lightweight, and corrosion-resistant, making them a popular choice for water supply lines today. Plus, they last much longer than older materials like iron or lead.

10. Plumbing is One of the Oldest Professions Plumbing dates back over 4,000 years to ancient civilizations like Egypt and Mesopotamia. The ancient Egyptians were some of the first to develop advanced plumbing systems with copper pipes to bring water into their homes. We've come a long way since then, but the essential need for plumbing hasn't changed!
